An independent communications agency has a requirement for a medical writer to join their team in their West London office.

Overall Purpose:

As an integral member of the client team, you take pride in developing high-quality content for your clients, efficiently combining their communications needs with writing best practices. You inspire the same commitment of anyone you mentor or manage. You also think strategically and with a business focus to add value to existing projects and develop new business

Key Responsibilities:
Core Functions:

  • Produce high-quality, accurate, and on-message content for a range of projects.
  • Act as a lead writer and client contact
  • Be accountable for the content you produce
  • Be accountable for the work of more junior writers who you may oversee

Knowledge:

  • Keep up to date with advances in relevant therapeutic areas
  • Maintain current, in-depth knowledge in relevant therapeutic areas (or subset[s], for large fields), and good general knowledge, including:
  1. drug mechanisms of action 
  2. disease state 
  3. treatment guidelines 
  4. competitive landscape 
  5. key political, regulatory, and global health care issues

Medical Writing:

  • Ensure that content you develop is scientifically accurate, clear, fully referenced, appropriate to the target audience, meets the client’s communication objectives, and conforms to any necessary client specifications
  • Ensure that the people you manage, supervise or mentor do the same.
  • Be confident planning and delivering content for 5–7 different types of project or programme, including:
  1. publications, abstracts, posters
  2. publications planning
  3. patient materials
  4. training materials
  5. meetings (symposia, workshops, ad boards)
  6. meeting reports
  7. medicines development
  8. web copy/newsletters
  9. agenda development, design 
  10. business development 
  11. KOL development
  12. moderation/facilitation

Editing:

  • Review other writers’ work for editorial accuracy (spelling, grammar, consistency), logic and flow
  • Review other writers’ work for scientific accuracy (check data, facts, references)
  • Review other writers’ work for messaging (in line with the product’s communication objectives and messages)

Line Management:

  • May mentor more junior writers and editorial assistants
  • May have line management responsibilities, including setting objectives and regularly checking performance against those objectives

Organization and Project Management:

  • Complete timesheets on a daily basis
  • Maintain and update project files and job bags
  • Ensure the above from the people you manage, supervise, or mentor
  • Ensure that you follow standard operating procedures (SOPs), including sign-off of job bag sheets
  • Ensure people that you manage, supervise, or mentor also follow SOPs
  • Provide support to accounts team and attend meetings as necessary (internal kick-off, status meetings, client calls)
  • Identify any problems or resource limitations that could jeopardise the delivery of a project on-time, on-budget, or with sufficient quality
  • Anticipate likely problems or resource limitations on your projects
  • Identify and anticipate likely problems or resource limitations on projects of those you manage or supervise
  • Judge workloads of those you manage or supervise, and allocate projects

Relationship Management:
External:

  • Maintain good relationships with clients
  • Function as the primary client contact for content issues on certain accounts
  • Look to develop new relationships with clients
  • Maintain good relationships with authors and subject matter experts

Internal:

  • Maintain good relationships with co-workers and communicate effectively to achieve project goals

Business Development:

  • Be alert to new business opportunities
  • Seek new business opportunities
  • Provide content support, as necessary, for business development (e.g. proposals, presentations)

Package:

Package is negotiable based on knowledge and experience.
