Description

This company is a leading medical communications agency based in Oxfordshire. Due to continued expansion they have a requirement for a senior medical editor. It is the responsibility of the Senior Medical Editor to take publications from an approved manuscript through to completion (typeset pages, printed copy, journal submission, etc) depending on the project.

Responsibilities:

  • The editing of manuscripts that have been written by in-house writers, freelance writers, clients or academic authors (editing for English, client/product style and messages, and consistency)
  • Liaison with designers (in-house and external) and clients to generate an approved design for the publication
  • Liaison with external and internal typesetters
  • Proofreading and checking typeset pages for accuracy, layout and consistency
  • Knowledge and experience of production processes, including§ full-colour publications
  • Manage several projects at any one time
  • Commission freelance editors when necessary and project manage their work and its quality
  • Coordination / overseeing aspects of the work of colleague (i.e§ team administrators)
  • Publication planning – researching journals and§ conferences, managing the plan and its components, organising and attending regular meetings and researching competitor information
  • Project manage review processes
  • Liaise with KOLs on behalf of the clients
  • Internal meetings and meetings with clients to discuss ideas for future projects
  • Identification of new business opportunities and participation in pitches for new business
  • Mentoring new editors and helping to train them in editing§ skills/project management, supply feedback and suggest areas of weakness and actions to be taken
  • Assist in the assessment of job applicants’ editing tests
  • Participate in editorial job interviews
  • On-line/paper-based journal submission and peer-review processes for publications
  • Edit electronic media (web/on-line/CD-Rom) and PowerPoint slides for consistency, presentation and key messages
  • Check reference citations – text, slides and§ illustrations – for citation details, accurate content, and most appropriate reference  – liaise with writer, as necessary
  • Member of large account team where scientific input is necessary
  • Ensure all communications carry product key messages in a consistent format
  • Visit printers as necessary to approve on press jobs
  • Commission/brief/liaise with external printers
  • Project costing and authorisation of invoices for several projects at any one time
  • Ensure projects are completed to schedule and on budget and liaise with clients/BUD on progress

Knowledge and Qualifications:

A Senior Medical Editor would have at least 2 years’ editorial experience in a medical communications agency environment and a degree in a life science in addition to all of the above core tasks/responsibilities. Applicants with an background in editing medical/life science publications will also be considered for this post or those with equivalent knowledge and skills.
