Description:
The Editorial Team Leader is responsible for the operational and line management of an editorial team to ensure effective and timely delivery of all editorial projects and programs within assigned account(s). The Editorial Team Leader is expected to manage the development and writing of all editorial components of assigned accounts. This responsibility covers all aspects of editorial activity from concept to delivery on individual pieces and complete programs, including publications strategy/planning, as well as the generation of manuscripts, slide kits, monographs, newsletters, and congress/exhibit materials. The Editorial Team Leader's priorities are team management, editorial strategy, and scientific quality control, as well as editorial efficiency ensuring the completion of projects on schedule and within budget.
Responsibilities Include:
Team Management, Training, and Development:
- Manage all aspects of the editorial activity related to an allocated clients' program(s)
- Short-, mid- and long-term workload planning in order to identify resourcing and recruitment needs; liaison with other managers to resolve as appropriate
- Identify and allocate the resources necessary to undertake a project, allocating projects on the basis of an editor's knowledge, capabilities, and workload
- Run editorial team meetings, providing direction and following up all actions
- Oversee actions arising from project team meetings
- Communicate progress, problems, proposed solutions, resource needs, and other information to the Global Editorial Director as appropriate
- Regularly review with the Global Editorial Director the performance, achievements, and development needs of assigned team members in order to ensure that editorial and support staff have sufficient knowledge and skills to manage editorial activities to the highest standards, within agreed briefs, budgets, and timeframes
- Training and performance review of all direct, and indirect, line reports
- Provide training to junior editorial personnel with regard to any editorial activity (eg, publications planning, technical writing); this may include contributing to induction programs, monitoring work quality, and helping to structure development plans
Project Management/QC:
- Identification and implementation of Best Working Practices, ensuring that all editorial QC processes are properly adhered
- Monitor the progress of all programs against schedule and budget, ensuring that all items are produced efficiently and to the correct specification, reporting any variances to Client Services
- Review the work of, and provide feedback to, freelance/in-house writers and editors to ensure that data have been interpreted accurately, product messages are clearly supported, and all editorial items are of the highest scientific, editorial, and production quality
- Ensure that all quality control procedures are followed, all approvals and sign-offs have been obtained, including those from client, authors, internal personnel, and act as final internal signatory
- Communicate to the assigned team and Global Editorial Director regarding quality control issues, and provide training for the editorial team in such matters as appropriate
Account Development/Strategic Input:
- Active participant in account management meetings
- Act as primary client contact for all account editorial, understanding client issues and client strategies
- Develop and maintain a basic understanding of the company's core capabilities, services, and products in order to contribute to client solutions
- Provide strategic and creative input into the generation of proposals and the subsequent development of editorial items, in cooperation with the Global Editorial Director and Client Services
- Understand the medical, commercial, and functional objectives of each assigned account
- Analyze, evaluate, and interpret client data to determine relevant support of product messages
- Apply appropriate scientific and marketing criteria to ensure that client objectives are met and overall standards are maintained
Communication:
- Communicate effectively and sensitively with team members and other internal departments
- Liaise with clients and faculty in a diplomatic, informed manner, projecting an efficient, capable, professional image at all times
- Directly communicate with client on all matters relating to editorial on assigned account(s)
Financial:
- Attendance at rolling forecast meetings to aid resource planning in order to contribute to the accurate planning of revenue
- Contribute to the budget development process for all assigned projects, in cooperation with the Global Editorial Director and Client Services
- Oversee financial monitoring within the editorial team and manage editorial profitability of assigned accounts
Knowledge & Experience:
- Bachelor of Science in the life sciences; higher degree is preferred
- Previous experience required in medical communications agency and experience within an editorial function or equivalent knowledge
- Good experience managing large-scale publication or medical communications programs
- Good communication/interpersonal skills
- Proven ability for people management including all aspects of training and development
- Appreciation of pharmaceutical marketing and the ability to apply this to clients' own strategies for their products
- Demonstrated ability to identify and meet client needs effectively
- Proven project management skills
- Authoritative client liaison skills; ability to relate to key client personnel and faculty in a professional and credible fashion
- Ability to negotiate effectively to gain the cooperation of other departments
- Computer literacy
- Willingness to travel to attend client meetings, international congresses, etc
- Proactive, solution-orientated approach
