A London based independent communications agency has an opportunity for an Editorial Team Leader.
Reporting and business objectives:
ETLs report to the Account Team Leader (ATL) and are responsible for:
- Ensuring content quality of medical writing output meets or exceeds client’s communication objectives
- Reviewing output to add value in terms of content, direction, flow, scientific accuracy and meeting strategic objectives
- Managing throughput of medical writing output to ensure on-time, on-budget delivery of programmes
- Leading the strategic development and implementation of publication plans
- Developing and maintaining scientific leadership role with selected clients
- Establishing and maintaining good working relationships with colleagues, clients, external authors and opinion leaders
- Acting as in-house scientific expert for allocated therapeutic areas; maintaining and updating knowledge and expertise and proactively sharing insights and relevance with team
- Identifying trends in industry and agency environment and exploring relevance and application
Line reports:
- The ETL will be responsible for line-managing personnel nominated by the Account Team Leader or Director of Client Service.
- Line management of the account medical writing team
- Ensuring team adheres to effective internal and client systems, processes and procedures
- Conducting personal development reviews, planning training, coaching and mentoring schedules
- Recruitment of editorial team members
ETL responsibilities:
Medical writing:
- Taking, interpreting and implementing project briefs from client or other team members
- Clearly identifying the communication objectives of a project by working directly with the client and other team members
- Ensuring production of high-quality medical writing across a variety of communications, such as journal manuscripts, marketing communications (e.g. newsletters, product monographs), meetings-related materials (e.g. abstracts, slides) and new media (e.g. inter/intranet sites)
- Ensuring that their own and the team’s medical copy is scientifically accurate, clear, and appropriate to the target audience
- Ensure that medical copy is produced in accordance with the client’s preferred style and that it meets the communication objectives of the client
- Provide suitable original illustrations to accompany text and ensure that permission to use illustrations has been obtained from the publisher/author
- Accurately interpret and implement feedback from clients, authors or opinion leaders (provide counsel to resolve conflicting feedback)
- Project administration and organization
- Manage and update project files
- Attend and contribute to internal project briefing/discussion meetings
- Where appropriate, attend client meeting
- Assist the team in monitoring actual writing hours/costs against those budgeted, and where appropriate, implement incremental billing
- Keep the appropriate members appraised about the status of projects
- Alert the appropriate members to potential problems on projects and discuss possible solutions
- Attend scientific meetings (e.g. conferences, roundtable meetings and workshops) to provide on-site support, gather appropriate information (e.g. notes, tape recordings) for communication outputs and, where appropriate, manage faculty members
Medical review and mentoring:
- Provide clear, accurate project briefings
- Provide constructive comments when reviewing a colleague’s work for medical/scientific content
- Provide mentoring and on-the-job training for members of the client service team
- Assist members in interpreting feedback from clients, external authors or opinion leaders
New business:
- Working with the New Business team to expand current business by suggesting new projects
- Working with the New Business team on the development of proposals and, when required, attending and presenting at new business pitches
- Member of the operational management team (OMT)
- Generation and implementation of freelance management procedures and SOPs
- Chairing and management of the company Writers’ Forum
- Generation, management and implementation of the company Science and Writing Academy
