Description

A successful independent communications agency has an opportunity for an editor to join their growing team. The editor is responsible for the development of high quality medical copy by providing a high standard of editing, project administration and co-ordination.

General:

  • To establish and maintain good working relationships with colleagues
  • To ensure that medical communications are produced in accordance with standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Build good relationships with clients, opinion leaders and external agencies
  • Maintain and update knowledge and expertise in relevant subject areas

Responsibilities:

General:

  • Where appropriate, complete project initiation forms before a project is started, seek sign-off of budget estimates from the CSD or Medical Director and ensure that project invoices are sent promptly to clients
  • Where appropriate, manage and update project files
  • Where appropriate, co-ordinate or manage specific projects to ensure they are delivered to budget, on time and meet the client’s communication objectives
  • Call, attend and contribute to internal project briefing/discussion meetings
  • Where appropriate attend client meetings
  • Create schedules for projects and monitor projects against schedule
  • Assist the CSD in producing budgets for projects
  • Keep project files and references up-to-date
  • Keep the EPM regularly informed about the status of projects

Editing:

  • Ensure that all medical communications are produced in accordance with the client’s preferred style
  • Quality control a colleague’s work to check for grammar, spelling and consistency before it is sent to the client
  • Production edit the final draft (for accuracy, consistency and readability, in accordance with SOPs) before it is sent to the client for sign off
  • Ensure that permission to use illustrations has been obtained from the publisher/author
  • Check artwork
  • Adapt manuscripts to journal requirements
  • Check references to ensure their accuracy and validity
  • Prepare submission packs for manuscript submission

Production:

  • Assist the Editorial and Production Manager (EPM) in the production process.

Project Administration and Organisation

Attendance at Scientific Meetings:

  • Attend scientific meetings (e.g. conferences, roundtable meetings, and workshops) to provide on-site support, gather appropriate information (e.g. notes, tape recordings) for communication outputs and, where appropriate, manage faculty members

An Editor will be able to demonstrate the following behaviours:

  • Establishing and maintaining professional and productive client relationships
  • Effective delegation to team and other available resources i.e. strategists, Managing Directors, new business, finance, administration
  • Clear communication to team, across departments and to senior management

  • Ensures client’s goals are met through creative communication programmes that achieve a client’s strategic objectives
  • Builds new business opportunities with existing clients through intelligence gathering and proposal development
